A California grandmother is recovering after she was attacked by bees, thanks to a local plumber who helped rescue her from the swarm.
On Thursday, a 911 call came in asking for medical assistance for a woman in her 50s named Juana, who had been swarmed by bees as she was napping outdoors.
A plumber named Diosdado San Roque, with Happy Plumbing, and his work partner drove past the house and quickly noticed that something was wrong.
Diosdado said that they noticed Juana standing in the street, leaning up against a car for support.
“She spoke to me in Spanish, saying she was about to faint,” he recalled. When she collapsed, he caught her before her head hit the ground, trying to drag her away from the bees.
“I was just trying to wipe all the bees off of her, but once I started doing that, they came at me,” he said. Video footage from the truck’s dashcam shows Diosdado spraying a fire extinguisher over them in an attempt to get rid of the bees.
Juana’s family was grateful that a total stranger came to their grandmother’s rescue. “I knew that’s somebody’s grandma, and, like, kind of got a flashback of my grandma, and I knew I had to do something about it,” the plumber said.
After 10 minutes, the fire department arrived with a helicopter, using the strong winds to clear out the crowd of bees. EMTs treated Juana, who was unconscious in the street, with epinephrine and Benadryl, and taken to the hospital.
